Eliot Spitzer Blames 'Gremlins' for Hooker Scandal on 'Today Show'

Spitzer was apparently refering to personal demons that drove his hooker habit while he was governor of New York, with a wife and three daughters left unawares in the governor's mansion

"There are no excuses," he told interviewer Matt Lauer. "I have tried to address these gremlins and confront them. What I did was an egregious violation of trust to my family, to colleagues, to the state, and I paid a price and appropriately so."
Spitzer said that the period of time during which he frequented high-priced prostitutes was "not long in the grand context of my life."

Did he ever get worried about getting caught?

"It crossed my mind," Spitzer said.

Spitzer resigned in disgrace on March 17, 2008, days after it was revealed he had been been caught up in a federal prostitution investigation and had, as "client 9," paid for sex with a young woman named Ashley Dupre.

Not surprisingly, he's thankful to his wife, Silda, and the rest of his family.

"I'm very fortunate guy," he told Lauer. "I have a spectacular wife, [and] three daughters who are wonderful [and] forgiving."
